The "Rules" of india
16 September 2010
India.... it really is a world upon itself. You will never go anywhere that confuses, frustrates, allures and makes you want to scream all at the same time. The place tests your patience and yet is one of the most spiritual places on the planet. These contradictions are what make India, India. Even the Indians self deprecate and belittle the governance and corruption that is rife throughout the country.
Either way we would definately love to go back to India and it carved out a place in our hearts. It makes you realise what real life can be like and that unless you experience these kinds of things you will always live in a bubble. Don´t- go to India instead!
We were sat on a platform waiting for a train that was already 17 hours late, but when we arrived at the station for the second time saw that it was now 24 hours late. During this time we wrote the following rules that we hope helps others in the future battle crazy India.
1. Certainty is simply not certain at all
A: Prepare for everything, expect anything and allow room for maneuver.
2. In India time does not exist by the clock
A: Be flexible... and patient- very patient
3. If there is no price tag it is open to negotiation.
A: As a foreigner at least half the amount if the price for locals.
4. Clean = Dirty. Not clean = Filthy
A: Change your expectations on hygiene standards- it won't kill you (mostly)
5. Generally in India the bin is the floor, or where you are sitting
A: If there are bins use them (this is MASSIVELY rare), but otherwise collect rubbish and take it with you until you find a box where other rubbish is dumped
6. Trains in India travel a long way and is the largest utility company in the world
A: Things can go wrong, so always allow 24hrs above what you would to make an important journey
7. Everyone in India does whatever they want and generally ignore things that is going on outside their personal bubble
A: If you want to do anything in India go for it! Hesitation will get you nowhere
8. The biggest crooks are rickshaw drivers
A: Ask for a tariff card, get a pick up from a hotel, ensure you get a rate card, agree price before you get in!
9. Charges for drinks vary
A: Cooling charge of a few rupees is valid, perhaps a few rupees for transportation, but check the "MRP" and stick to this, especially on water
10. Eating meat at a top restaurant is as risky as eating anywhere else.
A: If locals go there and it is busy then it is generally safe.
