Hi Simon, That is ace- exactly the kind of development that is needed. Bamboo has so many applications, so it is great it is being applied to such a widely marketed product.

Dan Handscomb, the bus journey will be fine. Statistics dictate that you are more likely to die through a horrendous accident in Bolivia, but there are certainly more RTA's in the USA and UK than in Bolivia.

With regards to the trains. We found that departure times can change. What we found online was the major times that are actually offered at the station, yet more can be available.

There are 2 major services however . The Ferrobus (around 12-15 pounds), which offers seats that recline nicely and essentially double as beds = the expensive option. Otherwise it is the local (more exciting) Regional/ "Pullman" service (5 pounds), where we had a wooden, sitting bench to sleep on. There is also the Express Oriental, but this was way out of our budet and so we only know that a lot of more wealthy tourists take this option, but it is in the region of 25- 30 pounds. With this you get food and it is air conditioned etc etc.

So the times we know of are as follows:

(SC= Santa Cruz Q=Quillaro)
Regional 11:00 Q-SC Monday to Saturday
Regional 11:45 SC- Q Monday to Saturday
Exp Oriental 16:00 SC-Q Monday Wednesday Friday
Exp Oriental 16:00 Q-SC Tuesday Thursday Sunday
Ferrobus 18:30 SC-Q Tuesday Thursday Sunday
Ferrobus 18:30 Q-SC Monday Wednesday Friday

We are planning on taking the train from Santa Cruz to the Brazilian border and are getting conflicting reports online regaring the amount of time it takes. I notice you rode the death train and was wondering if you had any idea on times? We will be going from Near Cochabamba to Santa Cruz by bus also.

Sucre is beautiful but we have to leave tonight for Cochabamba. Gotta admit I am a tad nervous about this overnight but your message has been reassuring and I will be running it through my mind as we travel. Locals have recommended Cocacabana bus company and have also reassured me that the road is safe and that the company is the largest and safest in Bolivia (as it only has one owner). They had nothing to gain from the advice so i am going with that.

Hey Dan, thanks for the comment. It is such a shame that you have to have your wits about you to the extent that it is hard to trust people when all you want is to connect with them! Good to know that you avoided this scam and hope that this blog helps others avoid it in the future.

I hope you are having an awesome time in South America...that is where you are at now??

Safe travels, Laura

We are on the end of the exact same scam operating near the Forbidden City in Beijing. Two girls approached us in the street, both speaking excellent English, and asked us if we wanted to go with them to a cafe to practice English together. I have to admit they seemed convincing, genuine and above all harmless. What could possibly go wrong? Luckily we remembered a friend telling us about something similar happening to them and they ended up paying a small fortune in chinese tea. It is a sad case of affairs when you are genuinely trying to connect with a people and it{s culture and there are those who would take advantage of this.
